Statement by Andrew Scheer recognizing International Women’s Day
March 8 is a day to recognize the extraordinary accomplishments of women in our lives. It is a time to celebrate the gains that have been made toward achieving equality for women in Canada and around the world.
International Women’s Day is also an important reminder that significant work still needs to be done to ensure women around the world gain the equality they absolutely deserve.
Millions of women and young girls around the globe continue to face alarming discrimination and appalling violence. In many parts of the world, they are trafficked into forced labor and sex slavery.Thousands of children are forced into early marriage and face death if they try to escape. Many women are treated as property of their husbands, and are simply left behind when it comes to education, decent work opportunities and empowered decision-making in their societies and governments.
Here in Canada, we must ensure that we design and implement policies where women can continue to prosper and thrive. On this special occasion, I would like to encourage all Canadians to recognize and celebrate the incredible women in our lives and in our society. Let’s honour our mothers, sisters, wives, daughters, friends and colleagues. Let’s ensure that the future for girls here in Canada and around the world is safe, equal and bright.
Happy International Women’s Day!
