When it comes to defending supply management, I can tell you that I have been an outspoken defender of the system since first being elected in 2004. I have always voted in favour of protecting our supply managed ag producers, and publicly stated my support numerous times in election campaigns and in speeches.
It is easy for some leadership candidates who represent urban ridings to say they support it. They do not face pressure from other producers who do not support the system. I have a large rural area in my riding with virtually no SM farms. Despite this, I have always defended the system, even though there is often pressure from other ag industry groups.
My record is clear. As an MP, I have always supported it. As Leader, I will stay true to our party policies and the supply managed farmers who have supported our party for so many years.
